Fermented, 100% Korean-Sourced
[Sooki's Herbal Roots] Fermented Ssanghwa Tea (3 Types)
We first came across this remarkable Ssanghwa Tea brand (숙이의 뿌리효소 이야기) at Lotte Department Store in Dongtan, where Sooki's Herbal Roots pop-up stall was offering samples.
One sip left us truly impressed — the gentle warmth that spread through our body, and the surge of energy was undeniable.
It was immediately clear that this was a tea crafted with genuine care and functional health ingredients.
What sets this Ssanghwa Tea apart from most other brands is its fermentation process. Instead of using dry, powdered herbs (which often lose nutrients during dehydration), this tea is prepared as a fermented herbal paste, maximizing nutritional absorption.
Here’s how it’s made: a curated mix of 100% Korea-grown medicinal herbs undergoes natural fermentation in traditional Korean onggi jars — Deodeok (fermented 5 years), Magnolia Bud (up to 3 years), and Goji Berry (1 year). These fermented herbs are then blended with additional roots, pulverized, and aged at low temperatures for 90 days, resulting in a potent herbal concentrate. Simply mix a spoonful with hot water to enjoy a rich, authentic cup of traditional Ssanghwa Tea.
(Tip: Many customers also enjoy taking a small spoonful raw, straight from the jar.)
3 varieties to choose from:
-
Deodeok Magnolia - Fermented Ssanghwa Tea (더덕목련쌍화차) - most popular

No Artificial Coloring. No Preservatives. No Additives.

Each variety comes in a 500g jar.
Storage tip: Please refrigerate after opening!
Editor’s Note: Traditionally, Ssanghwa Tea is enjoyed in Korea to revitalize the body, restore stamina, relieve fatigue, strengthen immunity, and warm the body. It’s especially beneficial during times of stress, low energy, or the onset of cold symptoms.

Available in three different varieties

Key Ingredient: Medicinal Deodeok Roots (약더덕) from Gangwon Province
From the pristine mountains of Gangwon-do comes our key ingredient – medicinal deodeok (약더덕).
Hand-harvested with care, these roots have long been cherished in Korea for their restorative benefits and rich, earthy taste. Grown in nature and freshly unearthed, they are the foundation of our enzyme fermentation

Medicinal Deodeok, brimming with natural sap
Our healthy deodeok roots are brimming with nourishing sap - this is restorative vitality!

Our Ssanghwa-cha is crafted with 14 carefully chosen medicinal herbs – from ginger, yuzu, and cinnamon to traditional roots like angelica, peony, and astragalus – a time-honored recipe for energy, balance, and vitality.
- 생강 → Ginger
- 유자 → Yuzu (citron)
- 백작약 → White Peony Root
- 감초 → Licorice Root

- 황기 → Astragalus Root

All herbal ingredients are proudly sourced from South Korea, grown across different provinces:
- Gangwon Province: 6-Year-Old Deodeok (약더덕, Codonopsis lanceolata root)
- Cheongyang Province: Liriope Root (맥문동)
- Mokryeon Province: Wolfberry / Goji Berry (구기자)
- Gongju Province: Chestnut Honey (밤꿀)
- Boeun Province: Jujube (대추)
- Goheung Province: Yuzu (유자)

Korean Cheongyang Goji Berries
Cheongyang, which produces 70% of Korea’s goji berries (구기자, Lycium chinense), is known as a pristine highland growing region. The berries are prized for their firm flesh and rich, juicy flavor. With a natural balance of sweetness and mild bitterness, goji berries have long been regarded as a precious medicinal fruit in Korea.

What makes Sooki's products different?
What makes our tea products unique is the fermentation. Just like traditional Korean sauces, we use earthenware jars (onggi) that breathe with nature, allowing the roots to ferment slowly and develop their full richness and potency.

Deodeok - Naturally Fermented for 5 Years!
We use 6-year-old Deodeok (약더덕, Codonopsis lanceolata) grown in Gangwon Province, which is naturally fermented for 5 years in earthenware jars. This carefully crafted Deodeok Ferment Extract becomes a key ingredient that imparts a deep, rich flavor to Ssanghwa Tea.

Magnolia Bud Ferment (Aged up to 3 Years)
We carefully harvest only the inner buds of the magnolia flower, which bloom in spring after enduring the winter cold. These are then naturally fermented in traditional vessels for 1–3 years to create our Magnolia Bud Ferment Extract.
Goji Berry Ferment (Aged up to 1 Year)
We carefully ferment premium Korean goji berries (구기자) for up to one year to create a rich Goji Berry Ferment Extract.
Combined with Deodeok Ferment Extract and Magnolia Bud Ferment Extract, this completes the foundation of our Goji Berry & Deodeok Ssanghwa Tea — a blend of three ferments and medicinal herbs.

Organic Raw Sugar Cane
We use organic raw cane sugar (원당) to naturally ferment the herbal mixture. Although more costly, it is a premium ingredient we proudly select to create a healthier and more authentic product.
Glycemic Index (GI):
Refined Sugar 109 > Honey 74 > Oligosaccharide 58 > Brown Rice Syrup 57 > Raw Cane Sugar 47

Another Step of Patience: 90 Days of Low-Temperature Aging
After blending the finest ingredients, we allow them to undergo 90 days of low-temperature aging.
During this time, the natural compounds of the herbs are slowly released, deepening both flavor and aroma, while enriching the nutritional profile.
Because of this meticulous aging process, only small batches can be produced — but each batch is crafted with integrity, staying true to tradition.
