Bangyudang is a famous grain roaster based in Gwangju with 40 years of roasting experience. Today, we offer their signature Toasted Sesame Oil.

Unlike larger brands, Bangyudang does not import cheaper sesame seeds from other countries. Instead they use 100% Korea-grown, premium sesame seeds. The seeds are first washed, then roasted to just the right level before being pressed. With 40 years of roasting experience, the owner has mastered the roasting variables like temperature, time and humidity to create a great tasting oil.

This sesame oil has a rich, nutty flavor that works beautifully with Korean banchans. If you've spent an evening preparing a proper Hansik meal, why not top it off with one of Korea's best sesame oil.

          Recipe Idea 1: Spinach Muchim


          Spinach (300 grams), Spring onion (1/2 a stalk), Toasted Sesame Oil (1.5 teaspoons), Soy Sauce (1 teaspoon), Minced Garlic (1/2 teaspoon), Sesame seeds - 1/2 teaspoon, Salt - 1/2 teaspoon


          1. Wash each spinach bundle thoroughly. Blanche spinach in boiling water for 1 minute (use a timer to not overcook!).
          2. Drain and place immediately into cold water. Squeeze water out of the spinach.
          3. Then de-tangle the spinach bundles. Place in sesame oil, soy sauce, minced garlic and salt. Mix thoroughly.
          4. Dice the spring onions stalk and add it to the mix. Give another mix.
          5. Garnish with sesame seeds (optional). Eat with rice!

          Toasted vs. Untoasted Sesame Oil? 

          Toasted Sesame Oil: The sesame seeds are first toasted and then the oil is extracted. This toasting process creates an oil with a much bolder, assertive flavor. However, some of the nutrition will be lost due to the heat. 

          Note: Toasted Sesame Oil is traditionally used for Korean recipes for its bold nutty flavor.

          Untoasted Sesame Oil: The sesame seeds are not toasted. This creates a lighter-tasting oil. Since the seeds are not exposed to heat, the nutrition in the seeds are not lost.

          Note: Cold-Pressed Sesame Oil has become more popular in the last decade due to more health-conscience buyers.
