Lock & Lock Breathable Stainless Steel Kimchi Containers (v2) with fresh kimchi in a bright kitchen

Crunchier Kimchi, No Fridge Smell

[Lock & Lock] Breathable Stainless Steel Kimchi Containers (v2)

  • Upgraded design
  • Patented breathing valve
  • POSCO STS 304 steel
  • Dishwasher safe

The Lock & Lock Breathable Stainless Steel Kimchi Container v2 (락앤락 숨쉬는 무연마 스텐 김치통) is the upgraded version of Lock & Lock's original stainless steel kimchi container. The biggest change is a breathing valve you open and close by hand, so you decide how your kimchi ferments.

Kimchi is alive. While it ripens it gives off gas, and in an ordinary container that gas has nowhere to go. This new container was designed around that.

A patented breathing valve on the lid lets fermentation gas out while keeping outside air from getting in, so your kimchi ripens evenly and stays crisp. Once it tastes just right, slide the valve shut and the smell stays sealed inside, not in your fridge.

The body is Korea's POSCO STS 304 stainless steel, so it won't soak up kimchi's smell or red color. It's also finished without chemical polishing compound, so there's no black polishing residue to scrub off before you use it.

The snap wings have been redesigned too. They're wider and easier to grip, snap open and shut with less effort, and lock the lid on tighter.

The clear lid lets you check on your kimchi without opening it, and its domed shape leaves extra room on top, so whole cabbage kimchi goes in without being squashed. Pick a small square for everyday serving, or a big rectangle for whole-cabbage kimchi and kimjang batches.

Daniel’s Take

This is LocknLock's newest version of its breathable kimchi container, updated based on customer feedback from the previous model! The upgraded lid is now made from Ecozen® and is dishwasher-safe. You can also manually open or close the air valve depending on how fermented your kimchi is, giving you more control over the fermentation process.

Common Questions:

Q: How is this different from the original Breathing Kimchi Container?
A: The v2 has three upgrades. You open and close the valve yourself, so you control how your kimchi ferments. The Ecozen lid is dishwasher-safe. And the redesigned snap wings are wider, easier to open and lock tighter.

The original vents gas on its own with nothing to adjust, and its lid is hand-wash only. Both are compound-free, with a 304 stainless steel body and a clear dome lid.

Note: Lock & Lock is a Korean company with factories in Korea and China. The original is made in Korea, and the v2 is made in their China factory.

Q: Is it dishwasher-safe?
A: Yes. The container and lid can go in the dishwasher at 80°C (176°F) or below. Put the lid on the top rack and skip high-heat settings like sanitize or heated dry.

Q: Do I need to open and close the valve?
A: Yes, it slides open and shut by hand. Keep it open while kimchi ripens so the gas can escape, then close it to lock the smell in.

Q: How long should the valve stay open?
A: For homemade kimchi, about the first month. For store-bought kimchi, about the first week. Then close it to keep the flavor fresh for longer.

[Lock & Lock] Breathable Stainless Steel Kimchi Containers (v2)[락앤락] 숨쉬는 스텐 김치통 v2

Lock & Lock stainless steel kimchi containers filled with kimchi

Crunchier kimchi, without the fridge smell

Good kimchi doesn't stop at the making. How you keep it decides how it tastes a week, a month, or three months later.

Lock & Lock built this container for exactly that: a lid that lets kimchi breathe while it ripens, then seals it tight once it's ready, on a body of food-grade stainless steel that won't hold on to smell or color.

Patented breathing valve. POSCO STS 304 steel. No polishing compound.

Top view of the kimchi container lid with the breathing valveLock & Lock breathing valve releases fermentation gas and blocks outside air

A valve that lets kimchi breathe

As kimchi ferments, it gives off gas. Lock & Lock's patented breathing valve lets that gas escape while keeping outside air from getting in, so your kimchi ripens evenly and keeps its crunch.

Once it tastes just right, slide the valve shut. The smell stays sealed inside, and the rest of your fridge stays kimchi-free.

Several kinds of kimchi stored in the stainless steel containers

Open while it ripens, close once it's right

Homemade kimchi: keep the valve open for about the first month while it ripens, then close it to keep the flavor fresh for longer.

Store-bought kimchi: keep it open for about a week to release any leftover gas, then close it and enjoy it at its best.

New containers arrive with the valve closed, so remember to open it when you first fill it.

Breathing valve guide: open the valve while kimchi ripens, close it once it's ripe, with timings for homemade and store-bought kimchi

Suggested timings from Lock & Lock. Adjust to your kimchi and how ripe you like it.

Stainless steel kimchi container splashed with water

No smell, no red stains

The body is made of POSCO STS 304, a food-grade stainless steel. Unlike plastic, it doesn't soak up kimchi's smell or its red color, so it stays clean and hygienic batch after batch.

Packing gat kimchi into the stainless steel container
Two compound-free stainless steel containers

No polishing compound to scrub off

Many stainless containers are polished with a chemical compound that can leave a black film you have to wipe away before first use. This one is finished by electropolishing instead, with no chemical compound at all, so there's none of that tedious cleanup.

Like any new kitchenware, give it a wash before you use it. If you spot any fine dust from production or shipping, wipe it off with a paper towel and a little cooking oil, then wash as usual.

Clear Ecozen lid showing the kimchi inside

See inside without opening it

The clear lid is made of premium Ecozen®, so you can check how your kimchi is doing without breaking the seal.

It's dishwasher safe, too. Just keep the cycle at 80°C (176°F) or below so the lid doesn't warp.

Lifting the kimchi container by its handle

Redesigned snap wings, sealed tight

The snap wings have been redesigned. They're wider and easier to grip, snap open and shut with less effort, and lock the lid on tighter. Silicone seals around the lid and valve keep everything airtight, and a fold-up handle makes it easy to lift a full container out of the fridge.

Before lifting it by the handle, check that all four clips are fully locked.

Close-up of the domed lid

Room for a whole cabbage

The lid domes upward, which adds extra space on top. Bulky whole cabbage kimchi goes in without being pressed down and crushed.

Pick a small square for everyday serving, or a big rectangle for whole-cabbage kimchi and kimjang batches. See the size guide below for which one fits your household.

A clear lid that can go in the dishwasher

The lid is made of premium Ecozen®, a clear material that lets you see your kimchi at a glance without opening it.

It's dishwasher-safe too, so you don't have to worry about it warping. Keep the cycle at 80°C (176°F) or below and put the lid on the top rack.

Parts of the Lock & Lock kimchi container: breathing valve, Ecozen lid, dome, silicone gasket, POSCO STS 304 body

Five parts, one airtight container

Lock & Lock's patented breathing valve sits in a clear Ecozen lid that's dishwasher-safe and domed to hold more.

A silicone gasket seals the lid tight, and the body is POSCO STS 304 stainless steel that won't hold on to smells or stains.

Product FAQ

Ask a Question
How is this different from Lock & Lock's original Breathing Kimchi Container?

This is v2. You can open and close the fermentation valve yourself, the Ecozen lid is dishwasher-safe, and the redesigned snap wings are wider, easier to open and lock tighter.

The original (v1) vents gas on its own with nothing to adjust, but its lid is hand-wash only (no-dishwasher!). Both are compound-free, with a 304 stainless steel body and a clear dome lid.

Note: LocknLock is a South Korean company with manufacturing facilities in both South Korea and China. The original version is made in South Korea, while this updated V2 version is produced at LocknLock’s factory in China.

How do I use the breathing valve?

Slide it open while your kimchi ripens so fermentation gas can escape, then slide it shut once the kimchi tastes right to seal the smell in.

For homemade kimchi, keep it open for about the first month - then keep it shut afterwards

For store-bought kimchi, about the first week - then keep it shut afterwards.

New containers arrive with the valve closed.

Won't my fridge smell of kimchi if the valve is open?

It can for a little while, as the gas escapes. Once enough fermentation gas has been let out, close the valve and keep the container in the fridge. The smell stays sealed inside.

How full should I fill it?

Fill it to about 70–80% and leave 2–3 cm (about 1 in) of space at the top. Kimchi can swell as it ferments and its juice can rise and spill over if the container is packed to the brim.

Is it dishwasher safe?

Yes, both the container and the lid can go in the dishwasher at 80°C (176°F) or below. Put the lid on the top rack, away from the heating element, and skip high-heat settings like sanitize, heated dry or steam, as they can warp it.

Can I use it in the microwave, oven or on the stove?

No. Keep it away from microwaves, ovens, direct flame and other heat sources. Stainless steel conducts heat well, so don't leave it near the stove either.

How should I clean it before first use?

Wash it before you use it. Lock & Lock suggests a mix of warm water, vinegar and dish soap (2:1:1) and a soft sponge, then rinse well. If you see any fine dust or dark specks, they come from the steel-making process and aren't a defect; wipe them off with a paper towel and a little cooking oil, then wash as usual.

The lid feels stuck after a long time in the kimchi fridge. What should I do?

Sudden temperature changes can damage the lid's clips. Leave the container at room temperature for 1–2 minutes before opening it, and don't yank the handle or knock it right after taking it out of a very cold kimchi fridge.

How do I keep the valve and seals clean?

Take out the lid's silicone seal now and then to wash and dry it. You can remove the valve to clean it too; just take care not to lose or damage its small silicone parts.

How do I keep the steel looking new?

Avoid steel wool and scouring pads containing polishing compound, and don't scrape it with knives, forks or other metal tools. If it gets stained after long use, soak it in water with a little vinegar before washing, and it will look bright again. Dry it fully before putting it away.

Can I store other things in it?

Yes. It works for any kind of kimchi, pickles and banchan, and for large fruit or other food you want to keep sealed and smell-free.

Where is this made - South Korea?

Most products on Gochujar are made in South Korea, but this one is an exception. Lock & Lock has factories in both Korea and China, and this container is made in their China factory.
