[Jook Jang Yeon] Premium Gochujang Paste (500 g)

Traditional Gochujang, Natural Ingredients

[Jook Jang Yeon] Premium Gochujang

  • 5 ingredients only
  • No refined sugar
  • No MSG or preservatives
  • Aged 6+ months

Jook Jang Yeon is a famous artisan brand for traditional doenjang and gochujang. Its pastes are sold in Korea’s department stores and are a favorite food gift during the holidays.

Today, we offer Jook Jang Yeon’s Premium Gochujang (죽장연 프리미엄 고추장). It’s made with just five natural ingredients: red pepper powder, rice syrup, glutinous rice, barley malt and sun-dried sea salt.

There’s no refined sugar. As the paste ferments over the months, the barley malt turns the glutinous rice into natural sugars, which gives the gochujang its gentle sweetness. And unlike cheaper gochujang, there are no additives, preservatives or MSG.

It’s slowly fermented the traditional way, for at least 6 months in large earthenware jars kept outdoors.

The result is thick and earthy, with deep flavor and a lingering heat. Use a few spoonfuls to add depth to stews, braises, marinades and sauces.

So what’s inside?

Full Ingredients List Red pepper powder 27%, rice syrup 27%, glutinous rice 25%, barley malt 15%, sun-dried sea salt 6%. All from Korea.

In the box One 500 g glass jar. Made by Jook Jang Yeon (죽장연) in Pohang, South Korea.

To keep Refrigerate once it arrives, and always after opening. Best before the date printed on the front or bottom of the jar.

Good to know Contains barley (malt), so it isn’t gluten-free. Gochujang is naturally fermented, so it keeps releasing a little gas inside the jar. We vacuum-seal every jar before it ships to prevent leaks, but changes in air pressure during the flight can still push out a little gas or paste. It’s still safe to eat, and a small leak isn’t grounds for a refund or exchange.

Best of the best

I have had my eye in this Gochujang for a while, and I'm so glad that I finally bought it. The difference between this and store bought is massive. The taste is so complex and not overly sweet. I will 100% buy again.

Traditional gochujang, natural ingredients

Jook Jang Yeon is a famous artisan brand for traditional doenjang and gochujang. Its pastes are sold in Korea’s department stores and are a favorite food gift during the holidays.

This premium gochujang is made with just five natural ingredients, all from Korea: red pepper powder (27%), rice syrup (27%), glutinous rice (25%), barley malt (15%) and sea salt (6%).

There’s no refined sugar, MSG, preservatives or additives. As the paste ferments, the glutinous rice and malt slowly turn into natural sugars, which give it its underlying sweetness.

The gate to Jukjang village in Korea’s Taebaek Mountains

From a hidden mountain village to your table

Deep in the valleys of Korea’s Taebaek Mountains lies Jukjang (竹長), a village shaped by history, integrity and quiet resilience.

With clean air and pure water, Jukjang has kept traditional Korean fermentation alive for generations, aging its jang in earthenware onggi jars so deep, natural flavor develops over time.

Rows of onggi jars in the green Jukjang valley

Slow, natural fermentation

Using ingredients grown in this pristine valley, artisans make authentic doenjang (soybean paste) and gochujang (red pepper paste) through slow, natural fermentation.

The pastes are aged with patience, so complex depth, balance and umami develop naturally over time.

Earthenware jars of jang aging outdoors at Jook Jang Yeon

A village partnership since 1999

In 1999, a formal partnership was set up to support Jukjang’s farming community and keep its agricultural traditions alive. What began as a local collaboration grew into a shared mission: to bring the honest flavors of this hidden mountain village beyond its borders.

Today, Jukjang stands for clean ingredients, time-honored craft and food made with integrity, from a remote Korean valley to your table.

Made by hand, with time

Glutinous rice is steamed and mixed with barley malt. The natural enzymes in the malt gently break the rice starch down into sugars, creating a soft sweetness that balances the heat of the chili.

Every batch is cooked over wood fires in traditional cauldrons and mixed by hand at Jook Jang Yeon’s workshop.

100% Korean red pepper powder

The sweet rice mixture is blended with Korean red pepper powder and sea salt into a thick red paste.

Rows of onggi jars of gochujang aging outdoors under the Jook Jang Yeon sign

Aged outdoors in onggi jars

The paste goes into traditional earthenware jars called onggi and slowly matures outdoors for months, often a year or longer.

Over time the flavors deepen and come together. The heat turns smoother, the sweetness rounder and the savory richness more complex.

The Jookjang village mothers who make Jook Jang Yeon’s jang, with their onggi jars

The heart of it: the Jookjang villagers

Since Jook Jang Yeon was founded more than 10 years ago, it has worked alongside about 20 mothers from Jookjang village. They are farmers by trade, growing apples, soybeans and red peppers through the season.

In the harvest months they give themselves fully to their fields. From November through May, they come back to make jang, so the land connects directly to the fermentation.

Made from what they grow

The care these mothers bring is at the core of Jook Jang Yeon’s flavor. They make the jang with red peppers and soybeans they’ve grown themselves.

The true masters of Jook Jang Yeon

As Jook Jang Yeon puts it, its growth is inseparable from the village’s prosperity. In every sense, the mothers of Jookjang are the true masters of Jook Jang Yeon.

Is this gluten-free?

No. It’s made with barley malt (엿기름), so it isn’t gluten-free.

Who makes this gochujang?

What’s the shelf life?

Please check the date printed on the front or bottom of the jar.

After a few months, the paste has turned a slightly darker color. Is this normal?

Yes, it’s completely normal. Gochujang keeps fermenting slowly, so it turns a little darker over time. It’s safe to eat.

After a few months, there is some liquid in the jar. Is this normal?

Yes, it’s completely normal. Just give it a mix. It’s safe to eat.

My jar arrived with a slight leak. Is this OK?

It can happen. Gochujang is naturally fermented, so it keeps releasing a little gas inside the jar.
