Lock & Lock Breathing Kimchi Containers in stainless steel, with clear lids and breathing valves

Keep Your Kimchi Tasting Fresh

[Lock & Lock] Breathing Kimchi Containers - Stainless Steel

  • Patented breathing valve
  • 304 stainless steel
  • Leak-proof silicone seal
  • 8 sizes

The Lock & Lock Breathing Kimchi Container (락앤락 숨쉬는 스텐 김치통) is a 304 stainless steel kimchi container with a patented air valve, made in Korea by Lock & Lock.

The valve lets out the fermentation gases kimchi releases as it ages in the fridge, while keeping outside air from getting in.

That gives kimchi a steady, controlled place to ferment at an even, slow pace. The moisture stays locked in, and that crunchy, fresh-cabbage bite lasts much longer.

The stainless steel won't stain or absorb smells, so clean-up is easy. The silicone-lined lid keeps it leak-proof, even for watery mul-kimchi (물김치), and the clear lid lets you check on your kimchi without opening it.

If you eat or make kimchi regularly, it's worth having a container made just for it. Pick from a variety of sizes; how much kimchi each one holds is listed below.

Daniel's Take

Peel the sticker off the valve when it arrives, and you're set. The valve lets gas out on its own, so you never need to open or close it. To release gas by hand or to clean it, twist counter-clockwise, then clockwise to close.

Hand-wash only, no dishwasher! The heat will warp the lid.

So what's inside?

Made of 304 stainless steel (STS304J1) for the body, a clear PCTG lid, polypropylene (PP) clips and valve cap, a high-impact polystyrene (HIPS) handle, and silicone rubber seals.

Square sizes 2.4L (19.5 × 19.5 × 10.5 cm, about 1 napa cabbage) and 3L (19.5 × 19.5 × 12.5 cm, about 1).

Rectangle sizes 3L (26.8 × 19.2 × 10.7 cm, about 1 napa cabbage), 3.8L (26.8 × 19.2 × 12.8 cm, about 1½), 5.3L (30.2 × 22 × 13.2 cm, about 2), 6.3L (30.2 × 22 × 15.3 cm, about 2½), 7.6L (33.8 × 24.8 × 14.5 cm, about 3) and 9.8L (33.8 × 24.8 × 17.7 cm, about 3½). Cabbage counts are a guide and depend on cabbage size.

In the box One container in the size you choose. Made in South Korea by Lock & Lock.

Before first use Wash it with warm water, vinegar and dish soap mixed 2:1:1 using a soft sponge, dry it completely, and peel the sticker off the valve.

Good to know Hand-wash only, as the lid can warp in a dishwasher. Not for the microwave, oven or direct heat.

Worth it

It's really expensive but so worth it if you want to make good kimchi. They also left notes on every product of my order on how to use (and store) it, which was so thoughtful and nice. I'll definitely order again.

Worth buying

Good quality and doesn't let any fermentation smells into the fridge. I also like that the lid is transparent. I think this is a worthwhile purchase especially if you love kimchi!

Best Kimchi storage containers I tried so far

I’ve been making my Kimchi at home for years now and oh God what haven’t I tried, from glass jars to Korea made Kimchi plastic containers, the smell will always make it to the all other foods in my fridge, but this container keeps the kimchi fresh, completely sealed (I traveled for 4 hours taking one with me!) that even the smell doesn’t leak!

[Lock & Lock] Breathing Kimchi Containers - Stainless Steel[락앤락] 숨쉬는 스텐 김치통

Lock & Lock Breathing Kimchi Containers in stainless steel, stacked with kimchi

Kimchi that stays crunchy for longer

Lock & Lock's Breathing Kimchi Containers help kimchi ferment at an even, steady pace, so it stays juicy and fresh-tasting instead of turning sour too fast.

Every lid comes with Lock & Lock's patented Breathing Valve™, and the body is Korean 304 stainless steel that won't stain or hold on to smells.

304 stainless steel kimchi containers filled with kimchi

Korean 304 stainless steel

Made with premium stainless steel (type 304), the container won't stain or soak up smells, even after years of kimchi. Clean-up is quick and simple.

Twisting the patented breathing valve on the lid

The patented Breathing Valve™

The valve lets fermentation gases escape, while keeping outside air from getting in.

There's nothing to open or close. In its normal (closed) position, it releases built-up gas all by itself.

How the breathing valve keeps kimchi fermenting evenly

Why does kimchi need to breathe?

As kimchi ferments, it releases gases. Left trapped inside, those gases speed fermentation up, so the look and taste change quickly.

Let them out, and kimchi ferments evenly in a steady environment. It stays juicier, keeps more of its probiotics and holds on to that fresh, crunchy bite for much longer.

Before your first batch

Peel the factory sticker off the air valve. That's it: there's nothing more to do, and the valve takes care of itself from there.

Want to let gas out by hand, or open the valve for washing? Twist it counter-clockwise. To put it back in its normal (closed) position, turn it clockwise until it locks into place.

Hand-wash only. Never put it in the dishwasher: the heat will warp the lid.

Snapping the lid wings shut on the silicone-lined lid

Snap-on wings, silicone-lined lid

Sturdy snap-on wings lock the lid firmly in place.

The silicone seal keeps it leak-proof, so it's made for every kind of kimchi, even watery mul-kimchi (물김치).

Transparent lids showing kimchi inside the containers

A clear lid

Check on your kimchi at a glance, without opening the lid.

Dome-shaped lid on the Lock & Lock stainless kimchi container

A dome-shaped lid

Compared with a flat lid, the dome fits more kimchi. It's especially handy for big batches of radish kimchi or chonggak (ponytail radish) kimchi.

Carrying the kimchi container by its large handle

Large, sturdy handles

Built to last, the handles make it easy to carry a heavy load of kimchi in and out of the fridge.

Product FAQ

Ask a Question
How is this different from Lock & Lock's Compound-Free kimchi container?

This is Lock & Lock's original breathing container, released in 2022 and made in Korea. Its valve works on its own: it stays closed and lets fermentation gas out by itself, so there's nothing to adjust. The lid is hand-wash only. The newer Compound-Free version, released in 2026, is made in China. You open its valve while your kimchi ripens and close it once it's ready to seal the smell in, and its Ecozen lid is dishwasher-safe. Both are compound-free, so neither has polishing residue to scrub off, and both have a 304 stainless steel body, a silicone seal and a clear dome lid.

Can I put it in the dishwasher?

Please hand-wash it! No dish-washer! The lid will warp if placed into a dishwasher.

Is it easy to clean?

Yes. Soap and water is all it takes, and the stainless steel won't stain or hold on to kimchi smells.

How should I wash it before first use?

It's finished without polishing compound, so there's no residue to scrub off. Lock & Lock recommends a normal wash with warm water, vinegar and dish soap mixed 2:1:1 and a soft sponge, then rinsing and drying it completely.

Do I need to do anything other than remove the sticker?

No. Once the sticker is off the valve, that's it. The valve is designed to release gas by itself in its normal (closed) position.

Can it go in the microwave, oven or on the stove?

No. Keep it out of the microwave and oven, and away from direct heat and open flames, as stainless steel conducts heat quickly.

Any tips to make it last?

After a big temperature change, let it sit at room temperature for 1–2 minutes before opening, so the lid wings last longer. Avoid scraping the inside with knives or forks, which can scratch the steel. If the steel discolors after years of use, soak it in vinegar water, then wash it, and its shine comes back.

What are the containers made of?

The body is 304 stainless steel (STS304J1). The clear lid is PCTG, the clips and valve cap are polypropylene (PP), the handle is high-impact polystyrene (HIPS), and the seals are silicone rubber.
