Smooth. Nutty. Refined

[Bangyudang] Lightly Toasted Sesame Oil (S2 · Medium-Light Roast)

  • 100% Korea-grown sesame
  • Medium-light roast
  • 1 ingredient
  • 45 kcal per tsp

Crafted from 100% Korea-grown sesame seeds with over 50 years of roasting expertise, S2 (방유당 헤리티지 참기름 S2) is Bangyudang's medium-light expression: a sesame oil that leads with a clean, golden clarity and a gentle nuttiness that lets your ingredients shine.

Roasted at a lower temperature than S4, it delivers a soft, round aroma without the intensity of a darker roast. The result is a delicate oil that lifts a dish rather than anchoring it, ideal for lighter dishes where balance in flavor matters.

S2's medium-light roast brings a soft, clean nuttiness, noticeably more delicate than the richer, bolder flavor of S4.

Bangyudang uses only sesame seeds grown in Korea, never imported seeds.

Drizzle it over salads, tofu or bibimbap, or finish cold noodles, yukhoe (beef tartare) or marinated vegetables. Use it as a light seasoning oil anywhere you want subtle sesame warmth without overpowering the dish.

[Bangyudang] Lightly Toasted Sesame Oil (S2 · Medium-Light Roast)

방유당 헤리티지 참기름 S2

Bangyudang Heritage sesame and perilla oil bottles with roasted seeds

Bangyudang Heritage, est. 1972

Rooted in the deep aroma of Korean sesame and perilla seeds, and inspired by Korea's traditional auspicious flower patterns (吉祥花), this is Bangyudang's signature collection.

It starts with the finest Korean seeds, roasted over a traditional flame to keep every note of their natural fragrance.

S2 is the lighter of Bangyudang's two sesame oils: a medium-light roast with a clean, golden clarity and a gentle nuttiness that lets your ingredients shine. Like every Bangyudang oil, it's made only from 100% Korea-grown sesame, never imported seeds.

Bangyudang S2 medium-light roast sesame oil with its flavor profile

S2: medium-light roast

Roasted at a lower temperature than S4, so it has a soft, round aroma without the intensity of a darker roast. It comes in two sizes, a 200 mL and a 320 mL bottle.

Soft and nutty, gently roasted

Soft and nutty, with a warm toasty aroma and the gentle, lingering richness of roasted peanuts.

Beef tartare, cold noodles and a salad finished with S2 sesame oil

What to use it on

Salads, bibimbap, noodle dishes and Korean cooking in general. Drizzle it over tofu, finish cold noodles or yukhoe (beef tartare), or toss it through marinated vegetables: anywhere you want a subtle sesame warmth that doesn't take over the dish.

Bangyudang sesame oil lineup: S2 medium-light roast and S4 medium-high roast

S2 or S4?

S2 (medium-light roast) is lighter and cleaner, with a softer nutty aroma. It suits dressings, namul and lightly seasoned food, where you want a more delicate sesame flavor.

S4 (medium-high roast) is deeper and bolder, with a thicker, smokier nuttiness, for stronger dishes where you want the sesame to stand out.

Storage guide for Bangyudang sesame oil

Keep it in a cool pantry, not the fridge

Oil has five enemies: light, oxygen, heat, moisture, and metals and enzymes.

Store the bottle indoors at room temperature (59–68°F / 15–20°C), away from direct light. Sunlight and heat speed up oxidation, and in the fridge, condensation can add moisture that dulls the oil.

The four steps that set Bangyudang sesame oil apart

What makes it different?

Moisture. The water left in a washed, dried seed decides its aroma: too much and the oil turns dull and grassy, too little and it scorches. Bangyudang sets it just right for each seed.

Flame. A proprietary 3-stage radiant-heat roast sets the depth of flavor, from soft to boldly nutty.

Rapid cooling. The moment roasting ends, the seeds are cooled fast to lock the aroma in at its peak.

Micro-filtration. Impurities are filtered out, so the oil stays clear and stable from the first drop to the last.

Bangyudang BGST roasting process and technology

BGST process and technology

Bangyudang goes beyond simple roasting with what it calls BGST: moisture set for each seed variety, far-infrared roasting that heats every grain evenly to the core, rapid cooling to lock in the aroma, and research-grade filtration that cuts the compounds behind rancidity.

Far-infrared roasting raises flavor and antioxidants and lowers bitterness

Far-infrared roasting

Far-infrared heat reaches evenly into the core of every seed. Bangyudang says this raises the phenolic content and antioxidant capacity of the sesame, keeps the oil fresh for longer, deepens the flavor and cuts bitterness for a smoother finish.

Bangyudang HACCP certificates and production line

HACCP-certified

Bangyudang's sesame and perilla oil lines are HACCP-certified at every stage, from roasting through filtering and bottling.

Vegan Society certificate of registration for Bangyudang

Vegan-certified

Registered with The Vegan Society: 100% plant-based, with no animal-derived ingredients.

How to enjoy it

Use it as a light seasoning oil: drizzle over salads, tofu or bibimbap, or finish cold noodles and marinated vegetables. Being a lighter roast, it also works in place of regular cooking oil over medium heat. 1–2 tablespoons a day is plenty.

Product FAQ

Can’t find yours? Just ask us.

Ask a Question
Where are the sesame seeds from?

100% Korea-grown. Bangyudang uses only Korean sesame seeds, never imported ones.

What does it taste like?

S2 is a medium-light roast: lighter and cleaner than S4, with a softer, round nuttiness and a hint of roasted peanut. It suits dishes where you want a more delicate sesame flavor, like dressings or lightly seasoned food.

Can I cook with it over heat?

Yes, over medium heat. Being more lightly roasted, S2 works well in place of regular cooking oil and adds a gentle nuttiness. For high-heat dishes, add it as a finishing drizzle after cooking instead.

How much should I use per day?

1–2 tablespoons (10–30 g) a day is the sweet spot: in a dressing, on vegetables, or drizzled over rice or noodles. Sesame oil is a plant-based fat, so a little goes a long way.

How should I store it?

At room temperature (59–68°F / 15–20°C) in a cool, shady spot, not in the fridge, where condensation adds moisture that dulls the oil. It keeps for 24 months from the production date; the best-before date is printed separately on the bottle.

What about allergies?

The only ingredient is sesame seed, a common allergen. If you have a sesame allergy or any medical concern, please check with your doctor first.
