Premium-Grade Salt, Great for Kimchi
[The Salt] 3-Year-Aged Korean Sea Salt (Great for Kimchi)
- 100% Shinan sea salt
- Aged for 3 years
- Medium-coarse grain
- Great for kimchi
Introducing a premium sea salt from Korea: 3-year-aged Shinan sea salt (신안 3년 묵은 천일염), a natural, mineral-rich salt harvested on the islands of Shinan County (신안군), off Korea’s southwest coast.
Shinan’s shores are clean mudflats with fresh ocean air, plenty of sunshine and clean seawater, some of the best conditions for sea salt in all of Korea. In fact, Shinan’s mudflats are part of a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve.
Shinan sea salt is lower in sodium chloride, so it tastes milder than regular table salt. It also contains calcium, potassium, magnesium and other minerals. That’s why major Korean food companies such as CJ, Daesang and Nongshim use Shinan salt in their products.
Did you know this salt is aged for 3 years? After harvest, it’s left in a cool, dry place, where the crystals slowly release their leftover moisture, along with the bitter-tasting trace minerals in it. It takes a full three years for the bitterness to go, which leaves a better-tasting salt.
Many Koreans prefer Shinan sea salt for kimchi. Imported sea salt can make kimchi ripen too fast and turn overly sour. With its lower sodium chloride, Shinan salt keeps the fermentation slow and steady, so kimchi keeps the right level of sourness.
If you make kimchi, you’ll need a coarse salt for salting the cabbage. Give this Shinan sea salt a try and taste the difference through every stage of fermentation.

[The Salt] 3-Year-Aged Korean Sea Salt (Great for Kimchi)
신안 3년 묵은 천일염

Premium Korean sea salt, aged for 3 years
A natural, mineral-rich sea salt harvested on the islands of Shinan County (신안군), off Korea’s southwest coast.
After harvest, it rests for 3 years so the bitter-tasting moisture drains away, leaving a cleaner, milder salt.
Many Koreans reach for it when making kimchi. Available in 500 g and 1 kg bags.

Shinan Island: home of Korea’s finest sea salt
Shinan’s sea salt comes from clean seawater, dried on wide mudflats under plenty of sunshine and fresh ocean air.
The mudflats and salt farms of Shinan County are part of a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve.
That’s why major Korean food companies such as CJ, Daesang and Nongshim use Shinan salt in their products.

Collected the traditional way
The salt is raked and gathered by hand, using eco-friendly, traditional Korean methods.

Aged 3 years, so the bitterness is gone
After harvest, the salt is stored in a cool, dry place for 3 years.
Over that time, the crystals slowly release their leftover moisture (bittern, 간수), and the bitter-tasting trace minerals drain away with it.
It takes a full 3 years for all the bitterness to go, which leaves a better-tasting salt.

Milder, and rich in minerals
Shinan sea salt is lower in sodium chloride, so it tastes milder than many other sea salts.
It also carries more natural calcium, potassium, magnesium and other minerals, even more than France’s famous Guérande salt.

Made for kimchi
Many Koreans choose Shinan sea salt when making kimchi.
Imported sea salt can make kimchi ripen too fast and turn overly sour. With its lower sodium chloride, Shinan salt keeps the fermentation slow and steady, so your kimchi holds its flavor through every stage.
And for salting the cabbage, you need a coarse salt like this one.

A medium-coarse salt
Coarse crystals that are just right for salting cabbage, cucumbers and radish.
