Rich in Omega-3 Fatty Acid (ALA)
[Bangyudang] Lightly Toasted Perilla Oil (P1 · Light Roast)
- 100% Korea-grown perilla
- Light roast
- 1 ingredient
- Vegan & HACCP-certified
Fish like tuna, salmon and mackerel are well-known sources of Omega-3 fatty acids. But perilla seeds contain more ALA, the plant form of Omega-3, than any other plant source. One tablespoon of perilla oil has roughly the same ALA content as a whole mackerel.
Bangyudang is an artisan grain roastery in Gwangju, Korea, with over 50 years of experience. This is their lightly roasted perilla oil, P1 (방유당 헤리티지 들기름 P1).
The seeds get a brief, low-heat roast, just enough to remove moisture, and are then pressed into oil. No high-temperature roasting. The result is a light, subtle oil that keeps nearly all of its natural nutrition, including its Omega-3.
A word on flavor: this oil is noticeably milder than a medium-toasted perilla oil, less fragrant and less aromatic. If you're used to the bold, nutty character of toasted perilla oil, this will taste quite different. The tradeoff is nutrition: skipping the high-heat roast means the oil holds on to more of its natural Omega-3.
Because the flavor is delicate, it shines as a finishing oil. Drizzle it over pan-fried tofu, stir-fried mushrooms or japchae just before serving, or use it as a salad dressing base or a simple rice topping. It also handles gentle cooking over medium heat.

[Bangyudang] Lightly Toasted Perilla Oil (P1 · Light Roast)
방유당 헤리티지 들기름 P1

Bangyudang Heritage, est. 1972
Bangyudang's signature collection is rooted in the deep aroma of Korean sesame and perilla seeds, and inspired by gilsanghwa (吉祥花), Korea's traditional auspicious flower patterns.
It starts with the seed. Bangyudang picks only the finest Korea-grown grains and roasts them over a traditional flame, keeping every note of their natural fragrance.
P1 is their lightest roast: fresh and clear, with a subtle roasted scent that lets the perilla itself come through. Made from 100% Korea-grown perilla seeds, never imported, and roasted gently to keep most of its Omega-3.

P1: light roast
Fresh, clear perilla aroma from 100% Korea-grown perilla seeds. It comes in two sizes, a 200 mL and a 320 mL bottle.

Fresh and clean, lightly roasted
A light, delicate flavor where the freshness of the seed shines through a subtle roasted scent.
The roast only takes the moisture out, so the nuttiness stays mild and centered on the perilla aroma, with a light, crisp finish.

What to use it on
Raw dishes like sashimi, salad dressings, light dishes and gently cooked food.

P1 or P3?
P1 (light roast) is lighter and cleaner, with a softer, fresh aroma. It suits raw dishes, dressings and mild-heat cooking, anywhere you want a delicate perilla flavor.
P3 (medium roast) is deeper and bolder, with a thicker, smokier nuttiness. It's the one for banchan (muchim) and bibim dishes, where you want the perilla to stand out.

Time-honored, bottled for you
The bottles draw on gilsanghwa (吉祥花), Korea's traditional auspicious flower patterns, and are meant to reflect the value of time.

Keep it in a cool pantry, not the fridge
Oil has five enemies: light, oxygen, heat, moisture, and metals and enzymes.
Store the bottle indoors at room temperature (59–68°F / 15–20°C), away from direct light. Sunlight and heat speed up oxidation, and in the fridge, condensation can add moisture that dulls the oil.

Bangyudang, since 1972
Bangyudang is a seed roaster in Gwangju, Gyeonggi-do, South Korea. They've been roasting grains since 1972; this photo is from the early days.

Half a century at the roaster
Over 50 years, the owner (pictured) has mastered the art of grain roasting. Bangyudang specializes in traditional Korean grains and oils.

What makes it different?
Moisture. The water left in a washed, dried seed decides its aroma: too much and the oil turns dull and grassy, too little and it scorches. Bangyudang sets it just right for each seed.
Flame. A proprietary 3-stage radiant-heat roast sets the depth of flavor, from soft to boldly nutty.
Rapid cooling. The moment roasting ends, the seeds are cooled fast to lock the aroma in at its peak.
Micro-filtration. Impurities are filtered out, so the oil stays clear and stable from the first drop to the last.

BGST process and technology
Bangyudang goes beyond simple roasting with what it calls BGST: moisture set for each seed variety, far-infrared roasting that heats every grain evenly to the core, rapid cooling to lock in the aroma, and micro-filtration that cuts the compounds behind rancidity. They're also working to cut their carbon footprint.

Far-infrared roasting
Far-infrared heat reaches evenly into the core of every seed. Bangyudang says this raises the phenolic content and antioxidant capacity of the perilla, keeps the oil fresh for longer, deepens the flavor and cuts bitterness for a smoother finish.

HACCP-certified
Bangyudang's sesame and perilla oil lines are HACCP-certified at every stage, from roasting through filtering and bottling.

Vegan-certified
Registered with The Vegan Society: 100% plant-based, with no animal-derived ingredients.
How to enjoy it
Drizzle it over salads, sashimi, tofu or namul, stir it into bibimbap, or finish soups and noodles just before serving. Being a light roast, it also works in place of regular cooking oil over medium heat. 1–2 tablespoons a day is plenty.
